Quinn and I are company men.

Meaning we carry a certain sense of loyalty for the companies we work – and have worked – for. This means that Quinn will always use Dial soap, shop at Home Depot, and buy Lort’s furniture. You think I’m just embellishing for blog’s sake. But next time you’re over at my house, take a peek into Quinn’s bathroom. That smell? Dial.

It’s a little harder for me, though. In the last five (5) years, I’ve probably had close to twenty (20) different jobs. Seriously. However, I did stay one place for a really long time (read: two years).

Yes, I called the Big Green Giant home for a long time. Long enough to be able to see, smell, and taste differences between coffees from different regions of the world. Long enough to order a complicated drink with precision. And long enough to defend its practices. That’s right, Sam the anti-Wal-Mart guy is a fan of Starbucks. We all have our weaknesses.

Anyway, I had a habit of reading the quotes on the back of the cups when I worked there. And along with drinking copious amounts of coffee, the addiction stuck. I still do it just for fun, whenever I am at a store I grab a few cups of each size (the difference in space availability affects the length of the quote) to scan for good ones.

If you are a faithful reader of this blog, you (hopefully) notice my use of quotes. I don’t just make those up. I search relentlessly for them. I’m an addict. I told you that already. Well, I found a golden one. I laughed out loud when I read it. People stared. I stared back. Ok, so I didn’t – but it would have made the story a whole bunch better…

The author of this quote founded a website that is definitely worth checking out. It’s called Grist: Environmental News & Commentary. There are articles on how to make backyard weeds into pesto and other edible items, what the greenest shaving cream is, and even a place to prepare yourself against “unbelievers” (Environmental Apologetics?). They are also looking for Development Director, so if you’re looking for a new job…

Enough build-up, already! I’ll see you guys later.

Cheers,
Sam
“So-called ‘global warming’ is just a secret ploy by wacko tree-huggers to make America energy independent, clean our air and water, improve the fuel efficiency of our vehicles, kick-start 21st-century industries, and make our cities safer and more livable. Don’t let them get away with it!”
Chip Giller

The mayor stopped by Palatte this morning for breakfast with his family. He has been busy the last few days. He threw down a pretty big speech yesterday calling out Sheriff Joe Arpaio on some of his questionable actions lately.

He also took some time out of his day to explain why he feels Earth Hour is so important for Phoenix:

The reason I wanted our city to be one of the lead cities for “Earth Hour” is to help remind every individual that there are small, simple changes each of us can make that will help curb carbon dioxide emissions. Each one of us can make a difference. Emissions equal to taking 48,000 cars off the road will be reduced during that hour.

That’s alot of cars. Here is his full letter posted on the Downtown Phoenix Journal, and here is a list of the other seventy (70) sustainability programs that the City of Phoenix is committed to.

I would love to hear about how you celebrated Earth Hour. Let me know in the comments!

Reportedly, this song is about large-scale consumption and mass marketing. I hate it when musicians hide the meanings of their songs under layers and layers of confusing subtext. After the band got back from seeing Jeff Buckley, Thom went into the studio and recorded the vocals in two takes, breaking down in tears after the session. Complete lyrics here.

Every once in awhile, I like to research causation. You know, the what and why behind someone’s actions. What makes them tick. It was this thinking that lead me to believe that this song is possibly what brought to the band announcing that they will only play at venues easily accessible by mass transit. Pretty cool, huh?

So cool, in fact, that back in January NME Magazine named Radiohead the “World’s Greenest Band.” The ratings were based on bands’ efforts to reduce their carbon footprints while on tour. Thom and the boys scored a two (2), far outshadowing many others, including The Police who chalked-up a seven (7). Maybe because they don’t care if it is wrong or if it is right…

Anyway, just a fun little piece of information for you as we head into the weekend. Now, we just have to figure out the best way to get to Grant Park by bus…

Cheers,
Sam
“One of the conditions of the band carrying on touring is that we do everything we can to minimize our impact on the environment. That has included buying two lots of equipment and keeping one in Europe and one in America so we never have to fly our kit around the world again.”
Thom Yorke

“Join thousands of people across Phoenix-and millions of people around the world-to make a bold statement about climate change on March 29th from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Turn out your non-essential and non-emergency lights for one hour. Earth Hour.

World Wildlife Fund is partnering with Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon and community leaders to help make history. Phoenix is honored to be one of four major cities in the nation-along with Atlanta, San Francisco, and Chicago-leading this landmark international event. Public buildings, landmarks, and major corporate offices will take part, and residents throughout Phoenix and its surrounding cities are encouraged to participate in this groundbreaking celebration.

At the first Earth Hour last year in Sydney, Australia, power consumption dropped by more than 10 percent. But Earth Hour is not just about cutting back for one hour. It’s about taking a stand and thinking ahead about what you, your neighbors and your city can do to make a difference.

Seize the Earth Hour moment. Change some of your outdated energy-wasting light bulbs to new, efficient and inexpensive compact fluorescents (CFL’s). Think of other ways you can cut your energy usage and trim your electric bill after Earth Hour has passed.

In 2007, Phoenix experienced the second hottest year on record. Six of the 10 hottest years in the Valley’s history have occurred since 2000. We have realized that we have to take a stand on climate change. That’s why World Wildlife Fund is organizing Earth Hour around the globe, and that’s why Phoenix is committed to this unprecedented event.

One person can make a difference. Cities, coming together, can change the world.

              One hour, Phoenix. Earth Hour.”

First, there is this warning from the City of Santa Ana. Parents, make sure you watch out for those backpacks and black books. Those things are scary!

ZPG has a variety of products, including belts made from recycled bike tires, stickers with the clever their clever logo (pictured), and shirts boasting that bikes have the ability to go fifty-three (53) miles per burrito. I wonder how many miles a torta will get you. Those things are amazing. The site is a real fun time. Poke around, you’ll find some good stuff in there. Promise.

Lastly, I have to let you know about yet another opportunity to join the Social Networking world. Ladies and Gentlemen, let me present to you, MyPeaceSpace! It would only be cooler if your computer started to smell like Patchouli when you visited the site. I kid, I kid. Seriously, though. This is a really neat project and you should check it out. Speaking of amazing things happening, I wonder if the people working on creating a US Department of Peace have profiles on MyPeaceSpace?

That’s all I have for tonight. Let me know what you think.

Cheers,
Sam
“All we are saying is ‘give peace a chance.’”
John Lennon

I am taking a lot of classes this semester. One of them is not Underwater Basket Weaving. One of them is, however, Environmental Biology. In that class we learn about how much we have screwed up the place we inhabit, and what we can do now to fix it. But it’s not just about textbooks and papers. We also are participating in a semester long assignment called “Project Action”. This is such an amazing idea that I had to tell you about it. Getting people excited about driving slower or composting organic kitchen waste is a daunting task. So why not force kids to change the world for college credit? Such a great idea. Read this from the description provided for us by the professor -

Choose three actions from the list on the next page. There are many things each person can do to reduce, reuse, and recycle, but these options were chosen because they are generally active decisions that you make many times a year.

The actions must be quantifiable. It must be something that you can measure the impact of in some way.

Of the thirty (30) or so options on the list, I chose all those relating to the bathroom. We have low-flow shower heads, bricks in the toilets, and we now use non-toxic cleaning supplies and non-antibacterial hand soap. Grey Water will soon be introduced, but that has to be Landlord Approved. The second part of the project is to see how much change the Project created in each of our own homes by documenting the changes quantitatively. Furthermore, we were provided with the estimated number of households in Maricopa County and the US as a whole. With these numbers, we will calculate how much our respective county-wide and national ecological footprints would be reduced if everyone enacted the same changes we did at the individual level. How cool is that?

That’s all for now. But I couldn’t go another day without letting you know about this. I’m excited to see the numerical results and posting my results and analysis for you all to enjoy. Look for those in the upcoming weeks. Until then, I’ll be creating a better tomorrow by eating fiber today.

Cheers,
Sam
“You pooped in the refrigerator? And ate a whole wheel of cheese?! I’m not even mad. That’s amazing!”
Ron Burgundy
(Will Ferrell in The Legend of Ron Burgundy)

It doesn’t matter if you don’t think my titles are clever. I do. And I sleep easier at night because I’m witty.

Today’s edition of the Grassroots Change Department (get the title now?) comes from the Sustainability Desk here at Deserted After Dark. Thoughts and contributions welcome. Snide remarks are not.

I’m a big fan of the book, Affluenza. If you haven’t read it, put it on your wish list. It’s a great read, I promise. The book was written, made, and produced in association with an organization called Redefining Progress. The people at RP are my heroes. In fact, if they happen to stumble across this, I hope they read this line

I want to do my internship with you in the field of Sustainable Economics

But I digress. They are connected with a variety of people and issues that you should know about, beginning with the organization itself. Seriously, check out their website. Other cool things happening:

Climate Justice Now!

-This is a blog put together by a group of people who were at the recent United Nations conference in Bali (more info here). Put plainly, there is just some awesome insider analysis here worth reading. Enjoy.

An Unequal Burden
(.pdf link)

- This is a rather lengthy document (for some of you, five (5) pages is too much, I know) that was put out a few years ago (2004) on the subject of African Americans receiving the short end of the stick when it comes to climate change. The Executive Summary gives you a pretty good idea of what’s going on, but the in-depth statistics are, at the very least, eye-opening.

Environmental Justice and Climate Change Initiative
(EJCC)

-This movement defines grassroots. Made up of a larger network of members, the EJCC is all about restructuring the discussion of climate reform, and giving youth a voice in the debate. After all, it’s their air, too, right?!

California Interfaith Power & Light

- The website really speaks for itself on this one. I feel like I don’t really have a lot of selling to do. But be sure to check out the Theology page, ’cause it’s amazingly in-depth.

Cooler

- I know you all are probably all done with your Christmas shopping. But how about birthdays? Or just every day jazz. This should be your hub. Cooler calculates the global greenhouse emissions of every product they sell, and then reverse it by creating agreements with other retailers. For instance, on the front page right now is a PT Limited Edition Cruiser Bicycle. If I purchased it through Cooler, instead of Overstock, I would be eliminating 230 pounds of global warming pollution. Pretty cool, huh? They are connected with Ebay, Staples, Macy’s, and many more stores. So if you have to shop, shop green!

You guys all have a Merry Christmas. I’m taking a break from this screen for awhile. I’ll see you after I have had my fill of caramel rolls.

Cheers,
Sam
“There are three critical ingredients to democratic renewal and progressive change in America: good public policy, grassroots organizing, and electoral politics.”
Paul Wellstone

But I have to narrow it down to keep your (and my) attention. Therefore, I say: Once more unto the breech, dear friends, once more!

Living in a simple way is important to me. This is not confined to issues of global warming, in fact some environmentalists think that the recent barrage of press on the subject might be a little too much. I definitely agree that the pendulum might be a little on the global warming side of things, but regardless, there are three (3) different stories I want to talk about in areas closely related.

From the Bad News Department first. The 10 million diesel trucks in China have recently propelled the country past the United States as the world’s largest emitter of global warming pollutants. The trucks create so much exhaust that it dims the headlights of oncoming vehicles. For fear of rationing, drivers wait hours idling in line to get as little as five (5) gallons of gas (pictured).

After I began reading the article, I was hoping for the answer. The solution to the problem of large amounts of diesel exhaust. But to no avail. China’s economy is so volatile that raising standards – and thus the cost of transporting goods – would crumble entire industries. This would cause incredible inflation among the Chinese economy, and would be sure to ripple across Europe and the Americas. This prognosis provided little hope. Trucks meeting the Euro 4 pollution standard cost upwards of $35,000 US dollars, whereas the Euro 2 standard trucks cost $23,000. In addition to those numbers, let’s take a quick look at these: Sulfur concentrations are limited to 15 parts per million in the US. In China, 2,000 parts per million are allowed. So there you have it: Lower pollution standards with a higher concentration of pollutants. Not a good combination, if you ask me. This New York Times article is part of a comprehensive series on the subject of the Chinese environment. There are some really interesting graphs, maps, and other cool toys on the site. Enjoy.

Let’s move onto some Good News. Researchers from Oregon State University began testing a high-tech buoy to capture wave energy in the Pacific Ocean this fall. Pretty cool. There is a lot of complicated science behind it all (full text), but this graphic should help:

Basically, the extremely-renewable energy of a wave is going to be captured and converted into usable, electric energy. That’s awesome.

And finally, Local News. Super Bowl XLII (42) will be green! AZ Super Bowl’s campaign, Go Green, AZ! is more than just a couple of billboards. Some highlights of the program:

- 100% of the power for the Super Bowl will be renewable. Salt River Project will be donating the renewable-energy credits from wind and solar sources.

- AZ Super Bowl is teaming up with the NFL Environmental Program to plant thousand of trees on more than forty-two (42) acres in the area devastated by the Rodeo Chediski fire.

The website also has a list of forty-two (42) recycling facts. There are some really interesting things on the list. Definitely worth a peek.

That’s all for now. Four finals down, only one to go!

Cheers,
Sam
“I pray what I am feeling in my heart will be communicated clearly that those who hear me will say, ‘We must act!’”
Nobel Laureate, Al Gore
(In his acceptance speech December 10th, 2007)
